Symphony Dinner Concert: Beethoven and Brooks

Andrés Orozco-Estrada  L. Beethoven   Wayne Brooks

The Houston Symphony concert on Sunday, March 6th, is a dream come true for me as an ultimate Beethoven fan:  Two Beethoven symphonies on the same program.  I don’t think the Houston Symphony has ever done this before.  Not while Mariglyn and I have been attending anyway.  You might recall that we featured a piece by Mariglyn’s favorite composer last year, Aaron Copland.  This year it’s my turn, doubled.  I guess she just can’t get a break.

This concert features Beethoven’s second and next to last symphonies.  Beethoven could be a little cranky, but these symphonies are among his most light-hearted.

As if that weren’t enough our own top-flight principal violist, Wayne Brooks, will be playing a piece especially composed for him by Houston Symphony Composer-in-Residence, Gabriela Lena Frank in 2007.  Violas don’t get too much attention with all those prima donna violins around, but you will develop a new respect for them when you hear Wayne solo in this piece.  We did.

And, of course, this concert will be under the expert direction of our now, not so new, conductor Andres Orozco-Estrada.  All I can say is you better have a good excuse for missing this one.

So Mariglyn and I hope to see you on Sunday, March 6, 2016 for the concert in Jones Hall at 2:30 PM (further details) followed by a sumptuous meal at the Spaghetti Warehouse at 5:30 PM after the concert.   The cost of this event is only $50 a person.  That price includes rear-orchestra tickets (normally $62-$80) close to the Patron’s Lounge for complementary intermission libations and dinner at the Spaghetti Warehouse (crisp house salad, San Francisco sourdough bread, choice of entrees, and beverage).  And we expect a few surprises along the way.

In short, this will be the cultural and the social event of the year – don’t miss it!

Parking on the street is free all day Sunday, so consider parking within walking distance to both Jones Hall and the Spaghetti Warehouse.  If the weather is bad, you might want to park in the Theater District Underground Parking (map) for $10.
